nature’s soil makers

# Why vermicompost

Earthworms are the best soil makers there are. What they leave behind is the richest, gentlest plant food in nature.

## What is vermicompost?

Vermicompost is compost made by earthworms. They feed on organic matter like cow dung and plant waste, and what passes through them, called worm castings, is dark, crumbly and full of life.

Castings hold nutrients in a form plant roots take up easily, and they carry the microbes that keep soil healthy. That is why gardeners call it black gold.

## What it does for your soil

- _Illustration: A root tip with fine hairs in the soil beneath a seedling, with sparks of nutrients drifting to it from a pile of castings on the surface_
### Full of plant nutrients
Worm castings carry nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients in a form roots take up easily.
- _Illustration: Two cupped hands holding a mound of castings, with a magnified circle above showing the bacteria and fungal threads living in it_
### Alive with good microbes
Every handful is packed with beneficial bacteria and fungi that keep soil healthy.
- _Illustration: A cut through loose soil crumbs holding a drop of water in their channel, under a hot sun, with a sprout standing above_
### Holds water longer
Soil stays loose, drains well and holds moisture between waterings, which helps through hot, dry spells.
- _Illustration: A hand pours castings generously around a young seedling, whose root goes on growing down through the soil_
### Gentle on roots
Much milder than raw manure or chemical fertiliser, so it is hard to burn young plants. Use the rates in our guide: more is not better.
- _Illustration: A small pile of fine, even granules on a windowsill beside an indoor herb pot, rain falling outside the window_
### Sieved and odourless
Fine, even granules that smell like fresh earth after rain. Clean enough for indoor plants.

### Nothing artificial
Made only from cow dung, plant waste and earthworms. No chemicals, no fillers.

## How it compares

Chemical fertiliser feeds the plant. Compost feeds the soil. Vermicompost does both.

__How vermicompost compares with regular compost and chemical fertiliser__
| | Vermicompost | Regular compost | Chemical fertiliser |
| --------------------------------- | ------------ | --------------- | ------------------- |
| Feeds plants | Yes | Partly | Yes |
| Builds healthy soil | Yes | Yes | No |
| Adds beneficial microbes | Yes | Partly | No |
| Safe for seedlings | Yes | Partly | No |
| Keeps working season after season | Yes | Yes | No |
