# Vermicompost vs compost vs cow dung manure: which is better?

What each one is, what the published Indian nutrient figures say, and which to use for pots, vegetables and orchards.

Key points

- Vermicompost is made by earthworms, compost by microbes and heat, and farmyard manure (FYM) is dung left to decompose with its bedding.
- Published Indian figures put vermicompost at about one to three times the nitrogen of FYM. The claim that it is five or ten times richer is not supported.
- Vermicompost is finer and more even, so it suits pots, seedling mixes and top-dressing. FYM is bulkier and cheaper to spread on large fields.
- None of the three replaces chemical fertiliser kilogram for kilogram, but Kerala Agricultural University says vermicompost in place of FYM allows the fertiliser dose to be halved.

People ask the same thing before they buy: is vermicompost really better than the cow dung manure and compost they already have? The honest answer is yes in some ways, by less than the advertising suggests, and not for every job.

## What each one is

- Farmyard manure (FYM): dung, urine and bedding from cattle, heaped and left to decompose. Farmers in India have used it for generations.
- Compost: plant and kitchen waste, and sometimes dung, broken down by microbes. A good heap heats up as it works.
- Vermicompost: the same kind of waste, eaten by earthworms. What they leave behind, the castings, is the product.

## What the published figures say

Nutrient content as published by Indian agricultural institutions (percent by weight)

| Material | Nitrogen | Phosphorus | Potassium | Source |
| ------------------------------ | ------------- | ---------------- | --------------- | ------ |
| Farmyard manure | 0.5% N | 0.2% P2O5 | 0.5% K2O | TNAU |
| Compost | 1.00% N | 0.65% P2O5 | not stated | NCONF |
| Vermicompost | 1.6% N | 0.70% P2O5 | not stated | NCONF |
| Vermicompost, range | 0.5 to 1.5% N | 0.1 to 0.30% P | 0.15 to 0.56% K | TNAU |
| Vermicompost, three feedstocks | 1.2 to 1.8% N | 0.1 to 1.9% P2O5 | 0.5 to 1.8% K2O | KAU |

The numbers differ because the feed and the method differ, and because the sources state phosphorus and potassium on different bases (as the element, or as the oxide). Read them as ranges. If you need a figure for your own soil, test a batch.

## What the numbers mean

Even at the top of the published range, vermicompost holds roughly one to three times the nitrogen of FYM. It is a richer and more even material, but it is not a fertiliser in the way urea is. Urea is 46 percent nitrogen, so one kilogram of it holds as much nitrogen as about 46 kilograms of vermicompost at 1 percent. That counts total nitrogen only, and not all of it reaches the plant in the first season.

That is why the agricultural universities pair organic manures with a reduced fertiliser dose and do not swap them one for one. Kerala Agricultural University's guidance says that using vermicompost in place of FYM allows the recommended inorganic fertiliser dose to be cut to about half.

## What research says about crops

A 2019 review of studies by Blouin and colleagues found an average 26 percent rise in commercial yield with vermicompost, strongest when it made up 30 to 50 percent of the soil volume. The authors point out that large effects may be over-represented in the published studies. Cornell's extension team found limited benefit from digging vermicompost into field soil, and good value in potting mixes for vegetable transplants.

## Which one to use

A practical guide

| Job | Good choice | Why |
| --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Pots and balcony plants | Vermicompost | Fine, even and easy to mix with potting soil |
| Seed trays and nursery bags | Vermicompost, 10 to 20% of the mix | Gentle and uniform; the share is capped so salts do not build up |
| Large fields on a budget | FYM or compost, vermicompost on high-value crops | Cost per tonne matters more than fineness |
| Fresh FYM heaps | Apply at least 15 days before sowing | TNAU advises this so decomposition does not lock up nitrogen |

Good to know

Vermicompost and FYM work well together. KAU's practice for chilli, brinjal and tomato is FYM or compost as the base, 25 tonnes per hectare, with 1 tonne of vermicompost per hectare as a top-dressing.

## Common questions

### Is vermicompost better than cow dung manure?

For nutrient content per kilogram and for how even the material is, yes, but on nitrogen by roughly one to three times and not by ten. FYM costs far less per tonne, so for large areas it is still widely used, often with vermicompost where it counts most.

### Can vermicompost replace chemical fertiliser?

Not kilogram for kilogram. At about 1 percent nitrogen it takes tens of kilograms of vermicompost to match the nitrogen in one kilogram of urea. Agricultural universities use it to cut the fertiliser dose, not to remove it.

### Can I mix vermicompost with FYM?

Yes. A common practice is FYM or compost as the base and vermicompost as a top-dressing, as in the KAU schedule for chilli, brinjal and tomato.

### Does vermicompost smell less than FYM?

Finished vermicompost should smell of earth. Fresh manure smells strongly until it has decomposed. Any sharp ammonia or rotten smell in either means the material is not ready to use.

### How long does vermicompost take to make?

Published guidance gives 45 to 100 days, depending on the worm species, the feed and the method: the ICAR centre for the north-eastern hills gives 45 to 50 days with the red wiggler, TNAU 75 to 100 days.
