closing the loop

# Waste in, living soil out

Every bag starts as something that would otherwise be burnt, dumped or left to rot, and ends as soil that grows food.

_Illustration: A farm landscape as a loop: a cow at a dairy gate, a shaded worm bed, wheat and a farmhouse with a basket of scraps at its door, joined by a dashed route along which a worm with a satchel crawls back toward the bed_

## The loop

Nothing is wasted along the way. The scraps of one garden feed the next.

_Illustration: The loop as a ring of five stations joined by arrows: dairy waste, earthworms, castings, crops and scraps, with a bead travelling round it_

1. Dairy waste
2. Earthworms
3. Castings
4. Crops
5. Scraps

## What changes

- _Illustration: A heap of cow dung and a cart of crop residue on the left, an arrow, and a cone of fresh castings with a seedling growing on it on the right_
### Waste becomes a resource
Dairy dung and crop residue that would be burnt or left to rot become living soil, instead of smoke and methane.
- _Illustration: A cutaway of dark crumbly soil: a seedling above, root hairs reaching between soil crumbs, microbes around the roots, and a water drop held in a pore_
### Soil gets better, not just fed
Castings add organic matter and microbes, so soil holds more water and needs less rescuing each season.
- _Illustration: A field bank with a sack of castings and wheat growing, white fertiliser prills fading out of the soil, and a channel of clear water running along the front_
### Less chemical fertiliser
As soil recovers, growers can cut back on synthetic inputs, which means cleaner water and lower costs.
- _Illustration: A shade-net shed of worm beds on the left, a village of small houses on a slope on the right, and two hands clasped between them in front_
### Local work, fair work
The beds employ people near the farms that supply the feed, and keep value in the villages around them.

## Soil is the point

Healthy soil holds water, stores carbon and feeds crops without constant rescue. Our work is to put back the organic matter and life that tired soil has lost, and to do it from waste that has nowhere better to go.

We will publish measured figures here as we gather them, so you can see the effect for yourself.

## Be part of the loop

Every pack closes it a little more.
